Before you send out those holiday cards

The photo that graces our holiday cards this year as taken in Hershey, Pa., in May. The cards read: Happy Holidays (2 returns) Brad and Leah

Please, people, please, remember that the apostrophe signifies possession.

I cringe every year when I get a card that reads, "Happy Holidays from the Smith's." The Smith's what? And it only belongs to one Smith?

Assuming there are at least two people in the Smith family and they, collectively, want to wish wish me happy holidays, it should read: Happy Holidays from the Smiths. See, "s" as in plural not possessive. And if you really feel the need for an apostrophe, at least use the word "home" or something afterward, like: Happy Holidays from the Smiths' home.

P.S. The Smiths are fictional, I'm protecting the not-so-innocent people of the world.
