Here's what to look for

Fox's broadcast of the Phillies-Dodgers game Wednesday (begins 2 p.m. HST) is likely to include a short feature on Maui native and Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino. And said short feature may or may not include pictures of local coverage layouts by Brad and Stefanie. My DVR is set.

The Arizonans (Arizonians?) invade the island

C (center) and DR present Brad with a "thank you" beer.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my friend D's youngest sister, C, is visiting our lovely island this week with her friend DR and their mothers. C invited us out Monday to spend the afternoon lounging by the pool with them. It was great fun for us. But their vacation started on a sour note with lost luggage and they were afraid that they'd be forced to wear the outfits that they'd had to purchase that morning for the rest of the week. As Brad and I were pulling away from their hotel around 5 p.m. (and they were supposed to already be at a luau), C called to say that one of their airlines had finally found their bags but wouldn't deliver them to the hotel. The other airline would deliver them to the hotel but someone had to go and transfer them from the first airline, which wouldn't transfer the bags themselves.

She asked Brad, "Would you guys mind going to the airport and transferring the bags? I've already given the airline your names and they said it was OK."

Brad was like, "Don't be ridiculous. If your bags are at the airport, we'll just go get them and bring them back ourselves. We'll be back after the luau."

C protested for a few seconds but accepted our offer. It didn't make any sense to have the bags in our possession and then hand them off to another airline that may or may not lose them again. Besides, we had nothing else to do.

When we returned to the hotel around 9 p.m., C and DR and their mothers were eternally grateful. C and DR performed some hula that they'd learned at the luau for us on their balcony and then we hit late-night happy hour at the pool bar with them treating us to all the beer and virgin lava flows (I was driving) that we could drink to show their thanks. That wasn't necessary ... especially the hula part.

And the circle is complete
Me, my friend D (who was not able to visit this week), C and DR all attended a certain western SoDak university. Also, C and DR, high school seniors at the time, were unwilling participants in my 1999 anti-Valentine's day party. When I showed at her sister's house several months later with Brad in tow, C joked, "I thought you hated guys." When we met up with her yesterday, she said, "I still can't believe you're married. Remember that Valentine's Day party that you and (D) had?"
